Unique editorial summary

Jason DeRusha interviewed Josh Liljenquist in the WCCO studio for Drivetime with DeRusha on January 5, 2024. The surviving 87.8-second official excerpt focuses on Liljenquist’s practice of purchasing food from local restaurants and sharing it with people experiencing homelessness. DeRusha asks about the emotional weight of the encounters, and Liljenquist says he frequently cries while hearing people’s stories.

Liljenquist explains that he does not simply hand someone food and leave. He often sits down, eats with the person and uses the shared meal as an opportunity to build trust, learn how the person is doing and spend meaningful time together. When DeRusha describes him as a celebrity, Liljenquist redirects the attention toward the individuals whose lives and experiences are being documented.

The archived clip ends in the middle of Liljenquist’s answer. No complete recording of the longer interview is currently known to exist, so the page must identify the media honestly as an official archived excerpt, not a full episode. This early WCCO appearance should also connect visitors to the broader, dated WCCO/CBS News Minnesota coverage of Liljenquist without implying that this interview caused later reporting.

00:00 — Jason DeRusha introduces Josh Liljenquist

JASON DERUSHA: He is the video creator who has gone viral by buying food at local restaurants and handing it out to homeless people. Josh, thanks so much for coming in.

JOSH LILJENQUIST: Thanks for having me.

00:12 — The emotional impact of the stories

JASON DERUSHA: Your videos are so emotional. It must be equally—maybe even more—emotional for you as you are experiencing these stories.

JOSH LILJENQUIST: The number of times I have cried since I started is astronomical. A lot of people are really excited when my car pulls up. They come up to me, give me a hug, and I give them food.

00:33 — Why Josh shares the meal

JOSH LILJENQUIST: I eat with them because, when you eat with somebody, you have that connection. It is not just giving food and letting somebody eat in front of me. We are sharing a meal. You spend quality time and get to know how their day is going. It is something I could never see myself stopping.

01:07 — Keeping the focus on the people being helped

JASON DERUSHA: You are a celebrity. Is that sort of weird?

JOSH LILJENQUIST: It is weird. I like when people come up to me, but I feel like the focus should not be on me. It should be on the people with these stories who are out on the streets—
